Maria Weber

Chosen as MSTA’s 2025 Outstanding Professor

We all know the phrase “Reach for the stars.” Delta State’s Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy Dr. Maria Weber has been recognized statewide for her passion for turning that statement into reality for many Mississippi students.

Recently, the Mississippi Science Teaching Association (MSTA) honored Dr. Weber by naming her the 2025 Outstanding College Teacher for her work in STEM education. The award was presented at their convention in Meridian. Many teachers across the state are nominated and a national panel chooses the winner.

Weber said, “I love my work at DSU and in the Mississippi Delta. It feels a lot like my home in southern Indiana. I have always had a deep passion for bringing the wonders of science to students of all ages, especially in rural areas that have traditionally lacked access to educational opportunities.” She added she is very grateful for the award and it continues to motivate her to partner with her fellow professionals to achieve the highest standard of science instruction. Weber noted, “I have literally fallen in love with teacher and professional development and we have a program at DSU that is a collaborative effort for rural STEM education.” In fact, one of the teachers she associates with in the program nominated her for the award.

In modern society, a good grasp of science and technology can open many doors of opportunity. For example, today’s youth will very likely see humans traveling to the moon and beyond in their lifetime. The wealth of knowledge to be gained by these ventures will surely benefit our understanding of our own planet and what things we can do to ensure our very survival as humans. Weber emphasized, “More and more people are realizing science and technology education is fascinating and fun. I want to continue to add more programs, including presentations at the planetarium, that showcase the interactions of physics and astronomy for area students and teachers alike.”

Weber remains busy with her collegiate class schedule, upcoming summer workshops and her Director duties at Delta State’s Roy L. and Clara Belle Wiley planetarium. To celebrate its 45th year, a full schedule of programs are slated this spring for adults and children. Details can be found on the DSU website by searching for the planetarium. There is also information available for interested students and teachers regarding workshops and other interactive activities.  Weber encourages them to experience the joy of learning about science and she looks forward to continue doing her part to help them do so.
